ACHARYA PRAFULLA CHANDRA RAY
Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray was born on August 2, 1861 at RatuliKatipara village He had his early education in Pathsala. came Calcutta for higher studies and got himself admitted into Hare School in 1871. He passed the Entrance Examination from there in 1878 and F.A. Examination from Metropolitan College in 1882. He won the Gilchrist Scholarship in the same year. He obtained his B.Sc. from the University of Edinburgh and D.Sc from the same University in the year 1887.
In 1889, he became a Professor of Presidency College in Calcutta. He conducted research works in Chemistry and invented a chemical compound, ‘Mercurous Nitrate’ in 1896. Next in 1900, he established the Bengal Chemical. Finally, he became a Palit Professor of the University of Calcutta where he worked till his retirement in 1936. Prafulla Chandra guided a group of young scientists in our country to carry on his scientific work. This great scientist died on June 16, 1944.
